It was 1985 and I was in the 5th grade living in Haines, Alaska. I did my older brother’s chores in exchange for Hall & Oates cassette and an Elton John cassette. Later that year on a roadtrip to Whitehorse I bought the Ghostbuster’s soundtrack on cassette.

First music I ever bought on my own was Aretha Franklin’s Greatest Hits on vinyl. Got it at a yard sale. Was probably 9-10. My mom bought me all my CDs and cassettes before that, but that’s the first thing I remember paying for by my bad self.
Smashmouth’s “Fush Yu Mang.” Looking back, I’m a little suprised my parents let me buy it, since I was something like six or seven.
