When He *Was* 64: Happy 70th Birthday Paul McCartney

June 18, 2012

A great big BRI Happy Birthday to The Walrus!

Now let’s get the argument started.

I asked Uncle John to give it to us straight: What’s the best Paul McCartney song ever? His answer:

Oh, so many. Solo album: Ram. From that, probably “Ram On.” Other favorites: “Oh,Woman, Oh Why,” “Mull of Kintyre,” “Wonderful Christmastime.”

Beatle faves: “Fool on the Hill,” “Get Back,” “Hello Goodbye,” “I Will” –  and all his other songs.

When I asked, What about these songs: “Let it Be,” “Blackbird,” “Yesterday,” “Hey Jude,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Helter Skelter.”

Uncle John’s pick: “Helter Skelter.”

He added:

“Hey Jude” gets a special award because is was daring to make a 7-minute single and it was the first Beatles single on Apple records. I have the sleeve from the “Hey Jude” single. It’s all black with one line of text: “The Beatles on Apple”. I showed it to my 17-year-old niece. Her comment: What do the Beatles have to do with Apple computers?

/sigh/

Happy Birthday, Paul.
