When I was a kid growing up in the perfectly wooded and swamped outskirts of Buffalo we’d go shovel off the pond after most school days from October or November until late March or so, and have us some hockey. I was usually goalie. My pads: newspapers, folded once, the long way, inside shopping bags and tied to my legs.
